A transfer student’s personal brand

Through communication, I strive to maintain quality relationships and apply creative and adventurous strategies to situations. I prioritize the quality of my work for others, and provide my full attention to their needs at any extent.

Forming this phrase was no easy task. Behind it lies years of learning, growth, doubt, and self-reflection beyond anything that I could have predicted. What I didn’t realize was that these experiences would become the foundation of my “personal brand” as I continued to create my own professional image.

My college experience started at Loyola University in New Orleans. As an International Baccalaureate diploma recipient and high school valedictorian, my work ethic was geared and ready for an academic challenge. There was one immediate problem though: I had no idea which direction that energy should go. The idea of deciding what I wanted to do for the rest of my life was daunting, and I was facing this realization in a place very far from home.

I decided to absorb as much as I could by diversifying my classes and branching out my interests. I soaked up the culture of the city, exploring as much as I could by commuting up and down St. Charles on the streetcar. My first year I studied business and participated in local business projects, strengthened my writing through the honors college, and helped found a fraternity on campus. I had no issues keeping myself busy; it was personal fulfillment that I lacked.

By sophomore year, I questioned my own interests and attempted to define my own strengths and weaknesses for the first time, all the while maintaining an executive position as the treasurer in my fraternity. I knew that I wanted to find something that utilized my strengths, but had difficulty finding something at my university that was compatible. I considered my options and weighed all of the possibilities, and ultimately decided to make the change to the University of Oklahoma.

For the first time in my college career, I feel as though I’ve found a program that’s compatible with my strengths.
